When you’re about to deliver a speech and you’re feeling anxious – do you experience what people call ‘butterflies in the stomach’?

If you have experienced these things, one time or another, they are among the simplest examples of how the state of our emotions affects our bodies. The same can work in reverse, too. You can experience this when you go for a relaxing massage – as the massage therapist starts kneading your muscles, you start to feel your troubles melt away and are overcome by a sense of wellbeing and calm.

The mind-body connection and health

Because of this undeniable connection between our emotional and physical aspects, it makes sense to keep both healthy so that neither one suffers. To take care of your emotional wellbeing, consider doing the following:

• Become self-aware and know your emotions and reactions to certain situations.

• Express your feelings in appropriate ways and never keep your emotions bottled up, especially negative feelings.

• Always think before you act; try to remain calm even when you are stressed.

• Learn to manage stress; master deep breathing and relaxation methods to cope better with stress.

• Strive for balance in all aspects of your life: work, play, family, and self-care.

• Exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals and get adequate sleep.

• Make and nurture friendships with people who know you for who you are.

• Find your purpose and seek out the meaning of life to you.

• Be optimistic, and learn to focus on the good things in your life.

• Volunteer, do good for others and see how it makes you feel good, too.

As part of your self-care program, practice the following:

Massage: Offers many benefits such as reducing muscle tension, improving circulation, stimulation of the lymphatic system, inducing relaxation, reduction of stress hormones, increase in joint mobility and flexibility, better skin tone, and faster recovery from soft tissue injuries.

Acupuncture: It is known to reduce stress, back pain, and neck tension. It may also relieve joint pain, headaches, and eye strain, strengthen the immune system, enhance mental clarity, and increase energy.

Eat healthy meals: Nourish yourself with nutritious food to keep your body and mind functioning as they should.

Exercise:Regular physical activity not only keeps you healthy but also improves your mood, tones the body, and strengthens the muscles.

Visit the salon: Get yourself a mani-pedi, or treat yourself to a professional hairstyle. Even little things like this will do wonders for your self-confidence.

Wear the clothes you like: Fashion has a way of boosting a person’s self-confidence. So, go ahead, wear that beautiful summer dress you’ve been keeping for a special occasion.

Travel: Meet new people, explore new places, and get to know other cultures – this is a great way to enrich your life and experiences.

Love yourself

Both emotional and physical health are important aspects of our overall health. People who are emotionally healthy cope well with life’s challenges and are in control of their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. They have good, healthy relationships. Emotional health also profoundly affects physical health, so it makes sense to care for both.
