Infrared: There's More to Light Than Meets the Eye

We are inundated with light waves every second of every day. There is the light that is visible to us: fluorescent tube lighting in grocery stores and office buildings, and the light from the stars in the night sky. Then, there is the light we don’t see: ultraviolet light from the sun that turns our skin red, tan, and wrinkled, infrared lights from fiber optic cables, satellites, and even remote controls, and microwaves from cell phones and your kitchen microwave.

All of these light waves consist of different lengths and are part of what is called the electromagnetic spectrum. This spectrum ranges from radio waves, which are very long, low-energy wavelengths, to gamma rays, the shortest and highest-energy wavelengths. The visible light rainbow sits in the middle of the spectrum. Scientists have discovered that all of these different wavelengths can affect the body, both positively and negatively, even if you cannot see them. And while there are studies around ultraviolet, green, and other light waves for healing, the wavelength that appears to have the most therapeutic potential is infrared.

Infrared therapy uses red and near-infrared light at a low frequency to penetrate the skin, reaching the cells located in muscles, nerves, and sometimes even bone. This light is then absorbed into the cells, kickstarting many natural processes in a safe, harmless way. Infrared treatments can help alleviate symptoms for almost any health concern you may have. These can range from mental worries such as anxiety, depression, and fatigue, to stimulating internal processes such as boosting the immune system, supporting adrenal function, and enhancing oxygenation. Red and infrared light therapy has also been shown to help with fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, neuropathy, and edema. It can also alleviate generalized pain and inflammation, and even help with fat burning!

At Angela Kung Wellness Center, we use red and infrared therapy in many of our treatments. During acupuncture and energy sessions, our infrared heat lamps can help relax and warm the body, allowing for deeper, more receptive healing. We also have our Infrared Sauna, which can help detoxify the body of heavy metals and toxins that have built up over time, as well as reduce stress, fatigue, and pain.

Finally, our most immersive infrared-specific treatment is our Frequency Elevation service. We use a medical grade machine that is programmed with different frequencies to target many different diagnoses. This treatment envelopes you in a red light set at a frequency specific to your body’s needs. The light from the pads will work to stimulate your cells while you lay in a comfortable, relaxing environment, and the accompanying vibration soothes your mind so you can easily enter into a deep, meditative state. Most people even fall asleep! We highly recommend pairing our Frequency Elevation with other modalities of energy work or acupuncture. It is safe for people of all ages and stages of life, so next time you're here, take an extra half hour for yourself to experience what infrared frequencies can do for you!
