Temperature Matters!


The wise traditions of many cultures of old drink hot tea and not ice water. Yet Americans are addicted to ice cold water, frozen smoothies, ice cold sodas, beer, and other beverages, and are used to grabbing drinks right from the refrigerator. We have deemed this refreshing. I will say I have too. But without the knowledge that temperature matters, Americans have become one of the sickest and fattest people in the world, with autoimmune issues rampant, and most people suffering from gut issues and inflammatory diseases. While there are many tips to great health, here's one that I would like to drive home for you now - Temperature Matters!



On a recent business trip with my husband to Arizona, we met with a partner who smartly watched my food and drink choices. Instead of a cold beer, I order a hot chamomile tea or a hot water with dinner. Knowing that I own and operate a holistic wellness center specializing in Eastern Medicine, his curiosity was peaked and asked me, "so why do you drink hot water?" I began to tell him that the body's digestive enzymes stop working at a temperature below 97.5 degrees, and if I drank something cold with my meal, I decrease my digestive and absorption power of the meal, as well as lower the temperature of my body, causing poor digestion and decreased circulation throughout my body, which, over time, leads to fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and a whole plethora of diseases. He was stunned. I continued to tell him that America is the one of the only nations that drinks freezing cold drinks all the time, by adding ice to water and having no idea the impact it has on our health.



Fast forward 3 months later, my husband tells me that he was on a business call and our partner just told him, "Tell Angela she is a genius and she fixed me! I've been drinking hot water with lemon every morning and it's changed my life! I have more energy and my digestion has improved. I'm drinking room temperature water at night instead of cold and I'm sleeping better so much better. Could this be a coincidence?" I assure you, I often tell patients it is not a coincidence that you are feeling better, sleeping better, no longer getting headaches, pain free now, etc etc etc. It's mind boggling that yes, we can heal our bodies! No pharmaceutical medications or surgery necessary! Your body can work again! But knowledge is power...



So to all of my beloveds, I'm speaking out to you - not because I'm a genius - but because I'm relaying common sense and knowledge that our society should learn and understand. It's up to us to take care of ourselves because no one else will. Not the Coca Cola or Beer companies, that's for sure. And there's no such thing as perfection. It's replacing a few drinks here and there with warm herbal teas or hot water with lemon, decreasing freezing cold smoothies, and treating our bodies as sacred as we treat our babies. If we won't give cold milk to a baby that came right out of the fridge, why should we do it to ourselves? For a baby, we typically heat up the milk and test it on our arms, making sure it's not too cold (or not too hot).


If you're interested in seeing what your body temperature is, you can check it at home for several days with an oral thermometer. The best way to check it is first thing in the morning right when you wake up before you get out of bed. If you're healthy it should be around 97.9 degrees as our nighttime hormones (like melatonin) keep us cooler so we can sleep well. Then check it again 30 minutes later and it should have risen about .5 degrees, because your daytime hormones (like cortisol) should have kicked in to bring you energy (heat) for the day. Then check it a third time between 1-3pm and it should be around 98.6.

Unfortunately most patients will find themselves seeing temperatures as low as 97.2 or 95.6. Some are even lower! And some temperatures are being masked and elevated by the inflammatory heat in the body or the lack of cooling hormones (all my menopausal women out there with hot flashes and night sweats, yes you're lacking in yin cooling hormones). My advice is: stop the cold drinks, eat warm meals, and start treating your body as a respectable functioning machine that needs to run at an optimal temperature. This can at least alleviate some health problems from getting worse.


You might say to me, "But I'm always hot! I hate hot drinks." or "I am a furnace at night and get night sweats." Okay, then we need to fix that problem as well! Because beneath that problem, meaning once we fix your overheating problem, you might still be too cold underneath all of that. I know, complicated!
